The Boathouse Victims In 79 AD, Vesuvius erupted near Herculaneum. Hundreds fled to stone boathouses by the shore. They waited for rescue ships that never came. A 500°C cloud of gas hit them. Their flesh vaporized in an instant. Starting in 1980, archaeologists found 340 skeletons still huddled together.
