The Captain's Last Ship

The Captain's Last Ship Cowper Coles invented the rotating gun turret. The Royal Navy doubted his ship design. He pushed it through anyway. HMS Captain launched in 1869. Its low deck made it dangerously top-heavy. On September 7, 1870, a gale hit Biscay. The ship rolled over and sank in minutes. Coles went down with about 480 others.
