The Detective and the Sidewalk Allan Pinkerton built America's most famous detective agency. In 1861 he foiled a plot to kill Lincoln. He hunted Jesse James and the Wild Bunch. Then in 1884 he tripped over his wife's poodle's leash on a Chicago sidewalk. He bit his own tongue on the way down. Gangrene set in and killed him.
