The Oak Coffins of Norfolk In April 2015, builders broke ground in Great Ryburgh. They were digging a fishing lake and flood defence scheme. Waterlogged soil had preserved something rare. Eighty-one wooden coffins emerged from the mud. Each was carved from a single oak trunk. They dated to the 7th–9th centuries. Anglo-Saxon Christians had buried their dead there.
