A Lima shantytown was built on top of thousands of mummies. ⚱️ . . . In 1999, archaeologist Guillermo Cock began excavating Puruchuco-Huaquerones on the edge of Lima, where water and electricity construction had exposed an Inca cemetery holding an estimated 1,200 to 2,200 mummies — some wrapped together with up to 7 individuals in a single cotton bundle. Above them, 40,000 living residents of the Túpac Amaru shantytown had been walking to work over the dead for decades.
