A bear carried artillery shells at Monte Cassino. π» . . . Wojtek was bought as a cub in 1942 by Polish soldiers in Iran for a can of bully beef. To board a British transport ship he was officially enlisted as a private in the Polish II Corps. At Monte Cassino in 1944 he hauled 25-pound crates of shells to the guns. He retired to Edinburgh Zoo and lived until 1963.
