The Falling Reactor In January 1978, a Soviet spy satellite lost control. Kosmos 954 carried a live nuclear reactor. It crashed into Canada's frozen north. Debris scattered across 124,000 square kilometers. Canada billed Moscow $6 million. The Soviets paid only half.
