The Texas City Disaster A cargo ship caught fire in port. It held 2,300 tons of fertilizer. Crew tried to smother flames with steam. That made it worse. On April 16, 1947, it detonated. At least 581 people died. The blast was felt 100 miles away. Anchors landed two miles inland.
