The Self-Fulfilling Prophecy Jerome Cardano was a 16th-century mathematician. He helped invent probability theory. He also cast his own horoscope and predicted his death date. September 21, 1576. When the day arrived, he was still alive. So, the story goes, he took his own life to make the prophecy true.
