The Standing Sleepers 2008. Research boat. Coast of Chile. Scientists drifted silently into something strange. Sperm whales. About a dozen of them. Floating upright. Heads near the surface. Bodies hanging straight down. They were asleep. Sperm whales only sleep 7% of the day, in 15-minute naps.
