Jean-Baptiste Lully conducted himself to death. 🎼 . . . On January 8, 1687, the composer accidentally drove his heavy conducting staff into his foot while rehearsing in Paris. Gangrene followed, but Lully refused amputation and died on March 22. The instrument keeping his orchestra in time ultimately stopped his own.
