Killed By His Own Invention William Bullock invented the rotary web press in 1863. It revolutionized newspaper printing. In April 1867, he was adjusting one of his machines in Philadelphia. He tried to kick a driving belt onto a pulley. His leg was crushed inside the press. Gangrene set in during the amputation. He died on the operating table.
