They dug up a hotel foundation and found centuries-old coffins. ⚰️ . . . 2016–2017, Philadelphia: workers excavating at Arch Street near the Betsy Ross House hit lead-lined coffins from the First Baptist Church burial ground, closed in 1859. Inside: preserved hair, teeth, buttons, even shroud fabric. The developer had been told the 300-year-old cemetery had been 'fully relocated' in the 1860s. It hadn't — and eventually about 500 individuals were recovered.
