The Inventor Sank With It Horace Hunley built the first combat submarine. He named it after himself. October 1863. He took the H.L. Hunley on a test dive in Charleston Harbor. It never resurfaced. Hunley and seven crewmen drowned inside. The sub was recovered, repaired, and sank again months later.
