The Port Chicago Disaster July 17, 1944. California's Port Chicago naval base. 4,600 tons of munitions exploded while being loaded. 320 men died instantly. 202 were Black sailors. The blast registered on seismographs in Nevada. When survivors refused to resume the work, 50 were convicted of mutiny.
