The Village That Lost Its Children Aberfan, Wales. October 21, 1966. A mountain of coal waste slid downhill. It buried the village school in seconds. 116 children died. So did 28 adults. Engineers had been warned for years. The tip sat on an underground spring. They kept piling coal on top anyway.
