The Town That Lost Its Fathers December 6, 1907. Monongah, West Virginia. A spark ignited coal dust deep underground. The blast tore through Mines No. 6 and No. 8. At least 362 miners died in minutes. Most were Italian and Polish immigrants. The town was left with around 250 widows and 1,000 fatherless children.
