The Hose That Didn't Fit Baltimore, February 7, 1904. A fire began at 10:48 AM in the Hurst building. It burned for 30 straight hours. 1,545 buildings reduced to ash. 140 acres of downtown gone. New York and Philly firefighters rushed in. Their hose couplings didn't fit Baltimore hydrants. They could only stand and watch.
