On September 30, 1999, JCO technician Hisashi Ouchi received an estimated 17 sieverts during a criticality accident in Tokaimura, Japan. A whole-body dose around 8 sieverts is usually fatal. Doctors sustained him for 83 days, but medicine could not repair damage written into nearly every dividing cell.
