The Cat Who Won a War Medal Simon lived aboard HMS Amethyst in 1949. A Chinese shell tore through the ship. He survived shrapnel wounds and singed fur. Then he kept hunting rats eating the crew's rations. Britain gave him the Dickin Medal. He remains the only cat ever awarded it.
