A lake exhaled and killed 1,746 people in their sleep. π«οΈ . . . On August 21, 1986, Lake Nyos in Cameroon burped up an estimated 100,000β300,000 tonnes of CO2 in a single silent cloud. It rolled downhill at 30 mph, hugging the ground. Villagers in Nyos, Kam, Cha and Subum never woke up. Survivors described a warm rotten-egg smell β then nothing for 36 hours. 3,500 cattle died standing.
