Soviet scientists lit a hole in the desert. It's still burning. π₯ . . . A Soviet drilling rig in Turkmenistan's Karakum Desert collapsed into a methane cavern. To burn off the toxic gas safely, geologists set it on fire, expecting it to extinguish in weeks. The popular story dates the ignition to 1971, but local Turkmen geologists told explorer George Kourounis the collapse likely happened in the 1960s and the fire was lit in the 1980s. Either way, the Darvaza crater β 230 feet wide, 100 feet deep β still roars. Locals call it the Door to Hell.
