The US government deliberately infected 1,300 people with syphilis. π . . . From 1946 to 1948, Dr. John Cutler and the NIH ran experiments in Guatemala, injecting syphilis, gonorrhea, and chancroid into prisoners, soldiers, and psychiatric patients β some through open wounds on their genitals. At least 83 died. The US government hid it until a Wellesley historian found the files in 2005. President Obama formally apologized in 2010.
