The Soviets buried a nuclear disaster for 32 years. ☢️ . . . On September 29, 1957, a waste tank at the Mayak plant near Kyshtym exploded with the force of 70 tonnes of TNT. It contaminated 23,000 km² and forced 10,000 people from their homes. The USSR classified it until 1989. Locals were told the glowing sky was the aurora.
