The Inventor's Bed Thomas Midgley Jr. invented leaded gasoline. He also invented CFCs that destroyed the ozone layer. Environmental historian J.R. McNeill called him the single organism most responsible for damaging Earth's atmosphere. In 1940, polio paralyzed him. He built a pulley system to lift himself from bed. On November 2, 1944, he was found strangled in it. The coroner ruled it a suicide.
