The Blackout That Built Hip-Hop New York went dark on July 13, 1977. Power failed for 25 hours. Looters smashed into Bronx electronics stores. Out came turntables, mixers, speakers. Kids who could never afford gear suddenly had it. Within a year, the Bronx DJ scene exploded.
