The Cherry Mine Fire Cherry, Illinois. November 13, 1909. A coal car loaded with hay sat beneath a wall-mounted kerosene lantern. It caught fire 500 feet underground. The timber shafts burned for days. 259 miners died trapped below. Twelve more survived eight days sealed in darkness.
