Jar 1881 Charles Guiteau shot President Garfield on July 2, 1881. Garfield died 79 days later from infected probing by doctors. Guiteau was hanged in 1882. His brain was preserved and shelved at what is now the National Museum of Health and Medicine. It still sits there, alongside fragments of Garfield's spine.
