John Pemberton's original 1885 recipe was 'Pemberton's French Wine Coca' β a knockoff of Angelo Mariani's cocaine-laced Bordeaux endorsed by Pope Leo XIII. When Atlanta and Fulton County passed temperance legislation in 1886, Pemberton stripped the alcohol, kept the coca, added sugar syrup, and renamed it. The temperance movement created Coca-Cola.
