The Year Without A Summer Mount Tambora exploded on April 5, 1815. The blast equaled 33 gigatons of TNT. Around 11,000 to 12,000 people died directly, and about 71,000 in total including famine and disease. The next year had no real summer. Snow fell in June in New England. Crops failed across Europe. People ate rats to survive.
