The Fatal Toothpick Sherwood Anderson wrote Winesburg, Ohio. In February 1941 he boarded a ship to South America. At a cocktail party he swallowed an olive. The toothpick was still in it. It perforated his intestine. He died of peritonitis on March 8, 1941. He was 64.
