In 2006, Fred β a rescued Abyssinian mix fostered by Assistant DA Carol Moran β posed as a sick kitten to bait Steven Vassall, who was performing unlicensed neuter surgeries out of his apartment. Vassall was arrested and later pleaded guilty in 2007. Fred received a Law Enforcement Appreciation Award from Brooklyn DA Charles Hynes, then was struck by a car months later at age 15 months.
