The Medical Chainsaw Two Scottish doctors invented chainsaws in 1780. John Aitken and James Jeffray designed them for surgery. The original chainsaw helped with difficult childbirths. It cut through pelvic bone during delivery. The hand-cranked device had a chain with cutting teeth. Forestry workers adopted chainsaws much later. Medicine gave us this powerful tool.
