The Temporary Tower Gustave Eiffel built his tower for the 1889 World's Fair. The structure was meant to last only 20 years. Parisians called it an eyesore and metal monstrosity. City officials planned demolition for 1909. Radio antennas saved the tower from destruction. The broadcast equipment made it too valuable to remove. Paris almost lost its most famous landmark to public hatred.
