The Albuquerque Drop On May 22, 1957, a B-36 bomber flew over New Mexico. A crewman grabbed a locking pin to steady himself. The pin released a 42,000-pound hydrogen bomb. It fell onto a field about 4.5 miles south of Kirtland Air Force Base near Albuquerque. The TNT detonated, leaving a 12-foot crater. The nuclear core, luckily, was stored separately.
