Death by Dessert King Adolf Frederick of Sweden loved his food. On February 12, 1771, he sat down to dinner. Lobster, caviar, herring, sauerkraut, champagne. Then dessert arrived. Semla buns in hot milk. He ate 14. He died that night. Swedes still call him the king who ate himself to death — though historians now blame a stroke.
