The Forgotten Titanic April 27, 1865. The SS Sultana steamed up the Mississippi. It was packed with 2,100 Union POWs going home. The boilers exploded near Memphis. Around 1,164 people burned or drowned. More dead than the Titanic. But Booth was killed just the day before. The story vanished from the papers.
