The reactor was melting. They sent men in with rags. ☢️ . . . July 4, 1961: Soviet sub K-19's reactor lost coolant 1,500 km from home. Captain Zateyev ordered 8 sailors into the compartment in raincoats and gas masks to weld a bypass line. They absorbed doses over 5,000 rem. All 8 were dead within three weeks. The sub was later nicknamed 'Hiroshima.'
