A screwdriver slipped and a blue flash filled the room π¦ . . . On May 21, 1946 at Los Alamos, Louis Slotin was tickling a 6.2 kg plutonium core with a flathead screwdriver when it slipped. The core went prompt-critical for half a second. Slotin died in 9 days. The observer 3 feet behind him, Alvin Graves, lived 19 more years β then dropped dead of a heart attack at 54.
