Workers on the Via Appia opened a marble sarcophagus and found a girl inside β skin intact, lips red, hair braided, packed with fragrant ointments and bark. Crowds of 20,000 lined up daily to see her at the Capitoline. Pope Innocent VIII, terrified Romans were venerating a pagan, had her secretly reburied at night. She has never been found again.
