The Lawyer Who Proved His Case Ohio attorney Clement Vallandigham defended a murder suspect in 1871. He argued the victim shot himself by accident. To prove it, he reenacted the draw in his hotel room. His pistol was loaded. He shot himself and died the next day. His client was later retried and walked free.
