Returned to Reykjavík 1972. Bobby Fischer beat Boris Spassky in Reykjavík. He became world chess champion. He then vanished for decades. In 2005 Iceland granted him citizenship. He died there in 2008 of kidney failure. He had refused treatment. He was buried in the tiny Lutheran churchyard of Laugardælir near Selfoss. The city of his greatest victory became his grave.
